Ryan Allen

B.S. Industrial Engineering & Operations Analytics B.A. German University of Arkansas Class of 2028

RyanAllen

I like problems where the answer is a decision: where people should park, how to spend a fixed budget, when a fast heuristic is good enough.

Right now I'm looking for a part-time engineering internship in Northwest Arkansas, before a planned year in Germany in 2027–28.

Which parking lots should campus open?

Lots to open

 average walk

  • Class building
  • Lot that could open
  • Opened lot
  • Walk to the nearest opened lot
Pick a number and your browser finds the lots that make the average straight-line walk to the buildings where classes meet as short as possible. It solves exactly, with branch and bound. Or pick your own lots and see how close you get. The model in my operations research project adds capacity, permit rules and traffic.

Projects

Two team projects from this semester, then two course assignments. Each page says what I did myself and what help I had.

  • HillPark

INEG 22203 Computing Methods II, fall 2026. Team of three.

A web app that tells a University of Arkansas student where to park for their class schedule. It ranks the lots your permit allows by walking time, driving time and traffic, checks whether a park-and-ride bus would be faster, and uses an integer program to pick the best lots for your whole week. Its score is minutes of walking and traffic delay, plus a penalty for lots likely to be full.

    • 16%lower week score with two lots instead of one (178 to 149)
    • 35automated tests, including brute-force checks of the week plan
    • 0.51R² of the traffic forecast on unseen days, vs 0.32 for averages

  • Campus parking permit model

INEG 26103 Introduction to Operations Research, fall 2026. Team of two.

The university sells more car permits than it has spaces. We're building a mixed-integer model that decides which permit each campus lot should serve, to shorten walks without sending everyone down the same road. Approved at the October milestone; results come in December.

    • 1.44car permits sold for every parking space
    • 110lots and garages in our dataset, with permit rules and sizes
    • 87.4%unsatisfied with parking in a 2024 campus study

Germany, 2027–28

I'm earning a BA in German alongside my engineering degree, and I'm planning to spend 2027–28 in Germany.

  • Fall 2027Exchange semester at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt)
  • Spring 2028Internship in Germany from February 2028. I'll apply in summer 2027 and I'm open to operations, supply chain, manufacturing and consulting roles anywhere in the country.
  • May 2028Graduate from the University of Arkansas
